An inside look at what brought me here
About That Sourdough Gal
Hi, I’m Rebekah, the sourdough enthusiast behind this little corner of the internet. My sourdough story is anything but straightforward—it’s a tale of trial, error, and a whole lot of learning along the way.
My First Sourdough Attempt
Let’s rewind to 2019. I stumbled into sourdough, thinking it was just another shiny new hobby (I’m a serial hobbyist, after all). Back then, the internet wasn’t exactly helpful when it came to sourdough. I tried creating a starter using some not-so-great instructions, fed it for a month, and finally baked my first loaf. It was… a hockey puck (see the photo…). Discouraged and overwhelmed, I gave up and didn’t think about sourdough again for years.
A New Beginning
Fast forward to 2023. Somehow, #sourdoughtok found its way to my For You Page, and I couldn’t look away. The bread looked incredible, and for the first time, sourdough didn’t seem so intimidating. I knew I had to skip the starter-making phase, though—been there, done that—so I asked for some starter in a local Facebook group. That’s where my journey really began.
What started as a personal challenge quickly became a full-blown passion. By April 2024, I decided to document my journey on Instagram.
Finding My Passion
This wasn’t my first blogging venture. My previous blog, which was very successful, was hit hard by a Google algorithm update in 2023, and I lost 80% of my revenue overnight. It was a tough time, but it gave me the opportunity to reinvent myself. Sourdough offered the perfect blend of creativity, curiosity, and connection.
Now, I pour my heart into sharing everything I learn—setbacks, experiments, and all—with a growing community of fellow sourdough enthusiasts.
My Approach
My philosophy is simple: sourdough is what you make of it. While some bakers enjoy crafting artisan loaves with a big, open crumb (and they’re stunning!), I believe sourdough can take so many forms, all equally wonderful. Whether it’s a soft sandwich loaf for your kids, a chewy bagel, or cinnamon rolls for a cozy breakfast, the beauty of sourdough lies in its versatility—and the joy it brings to your table.
I also think it’s important to keep it real. You’ll find plenty of honest moments here, from flops that didn’t rise to experiments that didn’t pan out. I’m not here to tell you how to bake; I’m here to share my journey and encourage you to make sourdough your own.
What has surprised me most about this journey is the kindness and support I’ve found in the sourdough community. After years in the blogging world, I was bracing myself for criticism, but I’ve been met with overwhelming encouragement.
2024 Sourdough Awards
One of the biggest highlights so far? Being awarded the silver medal for Most Educational Account in the 2024 Sourdough Awards. To be recognized alongside some of the best creators in this space was an honor I’ll never forget or take for granted.
