Easy Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend Recipe

Making your own pumpkin pie spice is so simple – I just had to throw up a recipe to supplement my pumpkin-themed sourdough goodies (recipes are comin’).
All you need is five simple spices: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.
Your DIY pumpkin spice blend will keep in your pantry for as long as the earliest expiration date on the individual spices.

How to Make Pumpkin Pie Spice
In a bowl, mix together your ground spices: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.

Cloves can be very strong, so if you’re not a fan, consider omitting or reducing them by half.

If you prefer a spicy kick, use Saigon (also labeled Vietnamese) cinnamon.
Some bakers also swear by adding a pinch of black pepper to their pumpkin spice blends for a similar effect. I think a pinch of cayenne would also be fun to try.
How to Use Pumpkin Pie Spice
You can do so much more with pumpkin pie spice than just making pie!
I plan to use it in sourdough discard pumpkin waffles and maple-pumpkin sourdough cinnamon rolls (recipe coming soon).

Use your DIY pumpkin spice blend in any recipe that includes pumpkin or would benefit from warming spices!
Here are some ideas:
- Drinks: Stir a pinch into your morning coffee, hot chocolate, or chai latte. It’s also incredible in fall smoothies with banana and vanilla.
- Breakfast: Sprinkle over oatmeal or yogurt. I also love adding it to pancake and waffle batters.

- Savory cooking: This might sound weird, but pumpkin pie spice is amazing on roasted butternut squash, sweet potatoes, or carrots. The warm spices bring out their natural sweetness.
- Snacks: Toss with nuts before roasting, mix into homemade granola, or dust over apple slices with a little honey.
How to Store Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice
I store my homemade pumpkin spice blend in a mason jar fitted with a spice lid (available from Mason Jar Lifestyle’s website or Amazon).

Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend
Equipment
- Cups and spoons (for measuring)
- Half pint-sized, wide-mouth mason jar (for storing)
- Spice shaker lid (for the mason jar)
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp ground ginger
- 1 tbsp ground nutmeg
- 2 tsp ground allspice
- 1/2 tsp ground cloves
Before You Begin
Instructions
- Combine 1/4 cup ground cinnamon, 1 tbsp ground ginger, 1 tbsp ground nutmeg, 2 tsp ground allspice, and 1/2 tsp ground cloves in a bowl and whisk thoroughly until evenly blended.

- Store in an airtight container (a mason jar with spice lid works great!) for up to 1 year or until the earliest expiration date of your individual spices.

Conclusion
You can buy pumpkin pie spice from the store, but if you have cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves, you may as well make it yourself!

You can adjust the quantity of the spice ingredients to favor those you like and minimize those you don’t.

Both of my daughters have a severe allergy to allspice. If I left it out should I replace with something else or would it be ok as is?
It’s OK as is! You might consider another warming spice like cardamom, but I find I prefer cardamom in apple pie spice versus pumpkin pie spice.
I mixed this up to use in Samantha’s (Healing Slice) Pumpkin Spice Sourdough English Muffins recipe and they smelled so good! I didn’t get to eat one yet because I am freezing them for camping next week, but I could tell by the look, touch and smell that they will be awesome!! I checked out other pumpkin spice recipes and I liked the quantities you suggest for each spice. I did halve the recipe because I’m not sure how quickly I will go through it.
